Meridian Hall, Toronto live recordings and venue details
The O'Keefe Centre opened on October 1, 1960 and has played host to many cultural events in Toronto, renamed a number of times, currently called Meridian Hall.
A medium sized venue (currently 3,191 seats) means not a lot of new acts played there, but the list of more mature acts is extensive. Besides live music, it has also been home to:
- The Canadian Opera Association (later the Canadian Opera Company or COC)
- The National Ballet of Canada
Historic timeline
- Originally the site of the Great Western Railway Terminal (built 1866) then used as the Toronto Wholesale Fruit Market until it burnt down in 1952
- Opened in 1960 as the O'Keefe Centre
- In 1974 Mikhail Baryshnikov (26 years old at the time) defected from the Soviet Union by escaping from KGB agents through a stage door into a waiting getaway car
- Renamed to the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts in 1996
- Renamed to the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in 2007
- Most recently renamed to Meridian Hall in 2019
