Massey Hall, Toronto live recordings and venue details
Massey Hall, built in 1894, has long been the heart of Toronto music. It was designed by Canadian architect Sidney Badgley with a neoclassical facade at 178 Victoria St. and moorish arches that span the width of the interior. He took his inspiration from the Alhambra Place in Spain as well as Louis Sullivan's Chicago Auditorium and Opera house. Around the top of the hall are thirty stained glass windows, each depicting a famous composer made by the Faircloth Brothers glass firm.
The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir began singing there in 1895, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra played there from 1921 until moving to Roy Thompson hall after their Gala Farewell Concert at Massey Hall on June 4th, 1982.
Historic timeline
- The Massey Music Hall (its original name) began with Hart Massey, who wanted to build a secular meeting place in memory of his son Charles where people from Toronto could meet and enjoy choral music not of a religious theme.
- Massey Hall was completed in 1894, as designed by architect Sidney Badgley.
- The first performance on June 14, 1894, featured a grand performance of Handel's Messiah by a 500-member chorus and a 70-member orchestra, led by conductor Frederick Torrington.
- The iconic fire-escapes bolted on the front of Massey Hall were added just after the Great Fire of Toronto in 1904 (and have since been removed).
- In May 1953, Massey Hall was the location of a notable jazz concert featuring: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. (The famous performance was recorded and released as Jazz at Massey Hall.)
