The Weeknd is the stage name for Canadian R&B performer, record producer, and actor Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (Amharic: አቤል መኮንን ተስፋዬ) who was born in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada (part of Toronto).
He released his earliest music in 2009 and has enjoyed worldwide success ever since, with a halftime performance at the Super Bowl LV, his song Blinding Lights ranked as the best-performing song in the Billboard Hot 100's history, surpassing The Twist by Chubby Checker, and as of January 2026 the most streamed song on Spotify with 5.25 billions streams.
