The Tragically Hip were one of Canada's most famous, and loved, rock bands, thanks in part to frontman Gord Downie's unique stage presence. They are commonly referred to as just 'The Hip.'

- The band formed in the mid-1980's with various band members playing together in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
- Their name comes from a skit in the Michael Nesmith movie Elephant Parts.
- They were 'discovered' by then-MCA Vice President Bruce Dickinson at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto leading to their first release in 1987.
- Between 1996 and 2016, the Tragically Hip were the best-selling Canadian band in Canada and the fourth best-selling Canadian artist overall in Canada.
- In 2013, the Tragically Hip were one of four bands honoured by Canada Post in a series of postage stamps. (Also honoured were Rush, the Guess Who, and Beau Dommage.)
- In December 2015, Gord Downie was diagnosed with glioblastoma - a terminal form of brain cancer. The band announced his diagnosis on May 24, 2016.
- The final Tragically Hip concert was held at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in the band's hometown of Kingston on August 20, 2016. It was aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and featured 30 songs and three encore sets, with the band finishing with a performance of "Ahead by a Century". It is estimated that it was watched by 11.7 million people (roughly one-third of the Canadian population).
