Alexander Thompson built this two storey Georgian inn between 1847 and 1848 as a resting place for stage coach passengers. Around it grew the small town of Mortlake (established in 1865). The building served as a hotel, then an apartment building, and finally stores were opened on the main floor (the Bluffs Smoke Shop was a long-time tennant, with The Midland Bargain Centre in 1950 replaced by Albert Christensen's television, radio, and appliance repair shop in 1952 which was then replaced with a paint store by 1953).
Somewhere along the way it lost its two storey front porch, but retained the center door with small windows on either side, and its two pairs of chimneys on either end of the building. It was eventually dismantled in 1962, moved to Black Creek Pioneer Village and rebuilt in 1966 where it stands today.
