Glendon Hall Manor

Now home to York University Glendon Campus, the manor house was designed in the 1920's by architects Molesworth, West, and Secord as a stucco covered Italian-style villa with a green tile roof. It has an elliptical walnut staircase under an oval skylight. At the time it was home to one of Canada's largest collection of Dutch portraits, and of modern British paintings. It stood on an estate that covered 125 acres - including 70 acres of cultivated gardens, with the rest serving as farmlands.

Timeline of Glendon Hall Manor

History of the area and the estate:
  • Historically the territory of Indigenous peoples, including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Mississaugas. They called the Don River the Wonscotanach river - an Anishinaabe word meaning burning bright light - which may come from the fire-lit torch fishing that took place in the area
  • 1924 - Edward Rogers Wood (1866-1941) and Agnes Euphemia Smart (1868-1950) build Glendon Hall Mansion -
  • 1925 - they present their former residence, Wymilwood renamed Falconer Hall on Queen's Park, to Victoria University
  • 1930 - Wood gifts part of his land to his daughter and her husband, Murray Fleming, where they built the Tudor inspired Chedington House
  • 1950 - Agnes Eupemia (Phemie) died and left the estate to the University of Toronto to be used for a university botanical garden
  • 1959 - becomes the founding campus of York University and was officially inaugurated in 1966 by then Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson
