You can learn more about John Ross Robertson (1841-1918) in his Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry which describes him as a "journalist, publisher, philanthropist, historian, and sportsman." He also published a six volume set: Robertson's landmarks of Toronto : a collection of historical sketches of the old town of York, from 1792 until 1837, and of Toronto from 1834 to 1908 Before his death he donated a huge collection of "historical materials, pictures, maps, books, and other documents" to the Toronto Public Library.
