Heydon House HotelBuilt in the 1890s to replace the older Durham Heiffer Hotel that stood in the same location, the Heydon House Hotel served the Junction until about 1911 when it became a boarding house. The distinctive turret was lost in renovations between 1948 and 1951. But back in 1867 Alex Heydon spent $33,000 to have James Ellis design the three story brick hotel with the large corner turret and two high vaulted entranceways.Inside was a tavern, dining room, and the Alexandra Hall ballroom on the second floor along with 25 guest rooms. It had a reputation from the start, with cockfights in the ballroom (then upstairs in the attic), and a notorious fight in 1903 between workers from the stockyards located to the west, and railwaymen from the train depots to the south. This fight was one reason The Junction voted to go dry and ban alcohol sales - which lasted until the late 1990s!
