Cumberland HouseFrederick William Cumberland was born in London, England in 1821 and came to Toronto in 1847. He entered into a partnership with William George Storm and together they designed and built many public buildings around the city, including University College. They designed and built this Italianate villa in 1857-1860. The original grounds, purchased from the Baldwin's, ran south of College St., with the house facing east, towards the University of Toronto Campus. The house was originally named "Pendarves" (sometimes spelled Pendarvis or Pendaris) which is the Cornish word for "meeting place".After Cumberland's death in 1881, the house was sold to A. Morgan Cosby in 1884 and renamed Maplehearn. He made a wide range of changes to the house, including re-orienting it towards St. George St. The property changed hands a couple more times before it was leased to the Government of Ontario as a temporary residence for the lieutenant governor - "Government House" - before Chorley Park was complete. In 1923 the property was sold to the University of Toronto and was renamed Baldwin House and used for a number of purposes, including the University of Toronto Press. In the mid 1960's it was renovated and restored to become the International Student Centre, when it was renamed to Cumberland House. It still stands today at 33 St. George Street, just north of College, and is one of only two remaining private houses built by Frederic Cumberland, Cumberland & Ridout, or Cumberland & Storm.
