Fashion photography at the ROM and AGO - Fall 2009

| |

Toronto has not one, but two fashion photography exhibits this fall. One at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and one in the new crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

  • Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years, 1923–1937
  • Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913 - 2008

Both shows are worth checking out if you are a fan of classic fashion, modern fashion, or portrait photography.

Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years, 1923–1937

Running from September 26, 2009 through January 3, 2010 at the AGO, this exhibit features more than 200 photos from the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair in the 1920's and 30's. It is presented in a relatively small space, with lots of photos grouped together making the photos seem quite 'personal' in a way, especially contrasted to the presentation of photos at the ROM.

The ROM features a wider range of styles and photographers with the Vanity Fair Portraits exhibit.

This collaboration between Vanity Fair and the National Portrait Gallery, London features black and white as well colour photos from 1913 through 2008. Not surprisingly, the list of celebrity portraits is huge, including:

  • Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
  • Jesse Owens
  • Albert Einstein
  • Louis Armstrong (and Lance Armstrong)
  • Martin Amis
  • Prince William, and of course his mother
  • Ernest Hemingway (and Mariel Hemingway)
  • Demi Moore pregnant
  • ...and on and on...

Some behind the scenes video from various shoots is also presented.

The photos are arranged throughout the 4th level of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. The space is very large and open, in contrast to the AGO presentation.
